Do you know what a zine is? Well, It comes from the word “magazine” and it is a form of self publication, expression and information sharing. Zines were very popular pre-internet in social activist movements such as the 2SLGBTQIA+, women’s rights, and BIPOC organizations worldwide. They were a means to bring about social change in a meaningful, creative, and hand-held kind of way. Zines are also a beautiful artform, and can contain visual art, poetry, and more.
This year, the Cape Breton Youth Project has been working with GSAs and pride groups island-wide to create and distribute zines from school to school. Our collection is growing! We have been seeing beautiful collage, poetry, and positive messages for self love. Keep your eyes peeled for zines floating around in schools, and reach out if you would like a workshop at your own GSA.
